🏈 Early signing period central
It's Christmas in college football land. Let's ride.
The early signing period begins today, and the Sooners have managed to keep a good portion of their pre-Rexit
commitments on board. We will update today’s newsletter with confirmation that each commitment has signed (✅ = signed NLI).A breakdown of the Sooners’ soon-to-be signees:
Quarterbacks
Nick Evers ✅
6-3 • 188 lbs • Flower Mound HS, Flower Mound, Texas
Prospect rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Overall ranking: No. 156 (Position: 10; State: 26)
The story: Evers was originally committed to Florida before flipping to Sooners on Dec. 9. He is one of the top dual-threat prospects in his class and will add valuable depth to a depleted QB room in Norman.
Running backs
Gavin Sawchuk ✅
5-11 • 185 lbs. • Valor Christian HS, Littleton, Colorado
Prospect rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Overall ranking: No. 73 (Position: 5; State: 1)
The story: An All-American Bowl commit, Sawchuk remained locked in on the Sooners, which paid off with his position coach, DeMarco Murray, staying on Brent Venables' OU staff.
Wide receivers
Nicholas Anderson ✅
6-3 • 195 lbs. • Katy HS (Katy, Texas)
Prospect rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Overall ranking: No. 239 (Position: 40; State: 38)
The story: A former Oregon commit, Anderson provided the Sooners with a much-needed verbal after seeing three receiver commitments flip to other schools over the last year. He is the brother of former OU running back Rodney Anderson.
Jayden Gibson ✅
6-5 • 185 lbs. • West Orange HS, Winter Garden, Florida
Prospect rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Overall ranking: No. 149 (Position: 25; State: 20)
The story: The towering receiver, who was once pledged to Florida, committed to the Sooners Tuesday night, providing OU with a valuable last-minute pickup that should be a mismatch for opposing defenses.
Tight ends
Kaden Helms ✅
6-5 • 222 lbs. • Bellevue West HS, Bellevue, Nebraska
Prospect rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Overall ranking: No. 328 (Position: 15; State: 3)
The story: Helms picked OU over the summer and stayed with his commitment to play for Joe Jon Finley, who will be his position coach after he was retained by Venables.
Jason Llewellyn ✅
6-5 • 240 lbs. • Aledo HS, Aledo, Texas
Prospect rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️
Overall ranking: No. 425 (Position: 20, State: 59)
The story: Llewellyn committed to the Sooners this past February and seems bought into the new coaching staff, which paid him a visit last week and bolsters an h-backs room that loses plenty of talent from the 2021 season.
Offensive linemen
Jacob Sexton ✅
6-5 • 285 lbs. • Deer Creek HS, Edmond, Oklahoma
Prospect rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Overall ranking: No. 238 (Position: 18; State: 5)
The story: The local product had all the major programs after him, but Sexton stayed true to the Sooners and provides Bill Bedenbaugh’s OL room with one of the top tackle prospects in the country.
Jake Taylor ✅
6-6 • 290 lbs. • Bishop Gorman HS, Las Vegas, Nevada
Prospect rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Overall ranking: No. 157 (Position: 16; State: 4)
The story: Another imposing tackle, who remained firm with his July verbal to the Sooners. It was a huge win for Bedenbaugh to keep the West Coast product on board and sustain the Sooners’ pipeline to one of the top high school programs in the country.
Defensive line
Cedric Roberts ✅
6-3 • 275 lbs. • Hendrickson HS, Pflugerville, Texas
Prospect rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️
Overall ranking: No. 582 (Position: 82; State: 84)
The story: OU won’t be retaining assistant Calvin Thibodeaux, who recruited Roberts. They still managed to keep Roberts engaged with the new direction of the program. He also had offers from Baylor, Boston College and Colorado.
Alton Tarber ✅
6-2 • 305 lbs. • Deerfield Beach HS, Deerfield Beach, Florida
Prospect rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️
Overall ranking: N/A (Position: 142; State: 143)
The story: Venables’ ties to the Southeast are already paying off. Tarber is a late addition to the class, flipping from Georgia Tech to Oklahoma on Tuesday.
Linebackers
Kip Lewis ✅
6-1 • 200 lbs. • Carthage HS, Carthage, Texas
Prospect rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Overall ranking: No. 252 (Position: 26; State: 40)
The story: Lewis picked the Sooners just as the program wrapped up spring ‘ball this year. The Sooners have Lewis and Kobie McKinzie as the team’s only two linebacker commitments, but the blue-chip prospects are a strong pair to land from this cycle.
Kobie McKinzie ✅
6-2 • 245 lbs. • Lubbock-Cooper HS, Lubbock, Texas
Prospect rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Overall ranking: No. 144 (Position: 13, State: 24)
The story: One of the crown jewels of OU’s class recently flipped to Texas before flipping back to OU on Monday. Losing McKinzie would have been a major blow to the Sooners’ 2022 class, but credit to the current staff for getting him back in the fold.
Cornerbacks
Jayden Rowe ✅
6-3 • 210 lbs. • Union HS, Tulsa, Oklahoma
Prospect rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Overall ranking: No. 270 (Position: 39; State: 9)
The story: Rowe’s profile has grown since committing to Oklahoma this past spring. His size at the cornerback position should be a welcome sight for the Sooners, who have made an effort to get bigger at the position in recent years.
Gentry Williams
6-0 • 170 lbs. • Booker T. Washington HS, Tulsa, Oklahoma
Prospect rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Overall ranking: No. 81 (Position: 10; State: 1)
The story: OU’s had terrible luck landing top-end defensive talent from its own backyard. But it’s somehow kept Williams committed, despite a coaching change less than three weeks before the start of the early signing period. Venables should be eager to receive Williams’ letter of intent, but he will have to wait until the regular National Signing Day in February.
Safeties
Robert Spears-Jennings ✅
6-1 • 195 lbs. • Broken Arrow HS, Broken Arrow, Oklahoma
Prospect rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Overall ranking: No. 290 (Position: 26; State: 6)
The story: Spears-Jennings recieved an offer from OU on June 9. Less than a month later, Spears-Jenning committed to OU and has been active on social media in promoting his future home since the new staff was hired.
Decommits
Xavion Brice
6-1 • 175 lbs. • Seguin HS, Arlington, Texas
Prospect rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️
Overall ranking: No. 788 (Position: 52; State: 111)
The story: Brice was committed to the Sooners, but flipped to Texas on signing day.
Pre-Lincoln Riley exit.
