âđ˝ Happy Tuesday, friends. Letâs ride.
đ¤Â Trivia: When was the last time OU kicked off at 11 a.m. in a season-opening game at home?
[Answer in footnotes]đ Change of plans
Just before 5 p.m. on Monday, OU and Tulane announced they will meet in Norman this weekend due to Hurricane Idaâs impact in New Orleans.
Hereâs everything you need to know about the last-minute switch:
Start time & TV: 11 a.m. on ABC
Will OUâs stadium be full capacity?: No, OU will only seat fans in the lower bowl (plus the suites).
So, about 50,000.Can I use my tickets for the game in New Orleans to get in?: No, OU will not honor any tickets purchased for the game at Yulman Stadium.
So, can I get new tickets?: Maybe. Season-ticket holders have first pick until 5 p.m. Wednesday (you should have already received an email). Students will be able to purchase tickets for $20 starting Tuesday (today). OU will hold a public sale on Friday if any tickets are left for $50 per seat.
Where can I get these tickets?: SoonerSports.com and the Oklahoma Sooners app (You will need to have OUâs official app or the digital tickets downloaded to your phoneâs wallet app to enter the stadium.)
Who will be the home team?: Tulane will be the designated home team
and all ticket sales from Saturdayâs contest will go to the Green Wave.Does OU plan to visit Tulane in the future?: Yes, but nothing is finalized.
đ¨ââď¸ Meet the Captains
OU announced h-back Jeremiah Hall, linebacker Caleb Kelly, quarterback Spencer Rattler and safety Patrick Fields as the 2021 squadâs captains.
I donât have much to say (because why would I critically analyze OUâs captains announcement?) but I had a thought.
I first met Fields, who was also a captain last season, the summer entering his senior year at Tulsaâs Union High School. At the time, I was doing a story for The Oklahoman about a few of his teammates (future OU defensive lineman Jordan Kelley and Oklahoma State receiver CJ Moore), while then-OU beat writer Brooke Pryor was set to write about him.
I wasnât sure if Fields would ever make a major impact at OU as I sat in on Fields and Pryorâs conversation but I knew one thing. This kid is different.
âEighth grade, I was going to the gym before school and now it's like, a lot of people want to go out and party,â he said. âFor me, I understand where I'm trying to go, and doing things like that can hinder my success.â
Iâd say itâs worked out for Fields.
â° On this day
Eight years ago today, OU beat Louisiana Monroe 34-0 to open its 2013 season. The contest marked Trevor Knight's debut as the Sooners' starting quarterback. He finished with 103 rushing yards on 13 carries and threw for 86 yards and three touchdowns on 11-of-28 passing. This game also marks the only time in school history OU has played on Aug. 31. Three years ago. The Sooners hosted Florida Atlantic on Sept. 1, 2018, and won 63-14 in Kyler Murray's debut as the team's full-time starting quarterback.
OU says it cannot staff a regular game-day operation with only five daysâ notice, especially with the upcoming holiday weekend.
You might wonder what this means, and to be honest, itâs pretty unclear to me as well. I imagine OU will call the coin toss, which would potentially give them the rare option to receive or defer on its home field.
