2022 OU football preseason fan survey results

The readers have spoken.
Ahead of Oklahoma’s 2022 football season, we asked you all to fill out a fan survey to get a better understanding of your expectations for this year’s team.
We received 124 responses, and I can’t thank you all enough for your participation.
Let’s dig in to the results.
What will OU's record be at the end of the regular season?
11-1 (44.4%)
10-2 (37.9%)
9-3 (10.5%)
12-0 (7.3%)
This team’s floor feels higher than most might expect, especially considering all the transition this offseason. There is a strong sense of belief in this staff and roster. Any of the records projected above would put OU in the Big 12 title game and if it can get to December at 11-1, there’s no reason the Sooners shouldn’t be a College Football Playoff contender.
Which game will be OU's toughest?
Nov. 5 vs. Baylor (55.6%)
Oct. 8 vs. Texas (21.8%)
Nov. 19 vs. Oklahoma State (8.1%)
Receiving votes: Sept. 17 at Nebraska; Oct. 29 at Iowa State; Sept. 24 vs. Kansas State; Oct. 1 at TCU
The defending Big 12 champions have the respect of OU fans — that Nov. 5 tilt between OU and Baylor should be one of the best games of the season and could possibly be the first of two matchups between the programs this season if both live up to their preseason expectations.
Which game will be OU's easiest?
Sept. 10 vs. Kent State (64.5%)
Sept. 3 vs. UTEP (17.7%)
Oct. 15 vs. Kansas (16.1%)
Receiving votes: Oct. 1 at TCU; Oct. 8 vs. Texas
Both Kent State and UTEP made bowl games last season but neither of the Group of 5 opponents should put up much of a fight against OU. If either of those two turn out to be tough outs for the Sooners, this might be a long season in Norman.
Which game is OU's biggest trap game?
Oct. 1 at TCU (27.4%)
Sept. 17 at Nebraska (17.7%)
Oct. 29 at Iowa State (17.7%)
Sept. 24 vs. Kansas State (12.9%)
Nov. 12 at West Virginia (9.7%)
Receiving votes: Oct. 8 vs. Texas; Nov. 26 at Texas Tech; Nov. 19 vs. Oklahoma State; Sept. 3 vs. UTEP; Oct. 15 vs. Kansas
The week before the Red River Shootout is always penciled in as a trap game, and OU fans know that. Now, Nebraska’s place at No. 2 might be a result of how I phrased this question on the actual survey. There was a note that read, “game they're not supposed to lose but might.” And it’s more than fair to say OU should beat Nebraska but it’s not a lock. I don’t think it fits as a true “trap game,” however, the way that road trips to TCU and Iowa State do.
Which OU home game are you most excited for?
Nov. 19 vs. Oklahoma State (56.5%)
Nov. 5 vs. Baylor (40.3%)
Sept. 3 vs. UTEP (2.4%)
Sept. 24 vs. Kansas State (0.8%)
Baylor gave Bedlam a good fight but couldn’t overcome what might be the last Bedlam game in Norman for a long time. My own personal take? Kansas State should be circled on all of your calendars. That one is going to be a fistfight.
Will OU make the Big 12 championship game?
Yes (95.2%)
No (4.8%)
It might come off as an overly confident fanbase, but Brent Venables didn’t come to Oklahoma to go 7-5. The standard for OU football remains unchanged — making the Big 12 title game is expected at minimum for OU fans.
Will OU make the College Football Playoff?
Yes (62.9%)
No (37.1%)
This is where it gets more tricky. If OU wins the Big 12, it will likely be within arms length of a playoff berth. This is looking more and more like a wide-open year in college football. Alabama and Ohio State are preseason favorites to make the playoff. But which teams will take the other two spots isn’t as clear.
How confident are you that OU could win one College Football Playoff game?
This was one of my favorite series of questions. 57.3% of responses were at a confidence level of 5 or lower. That’s more than fair for a program that’s yet to win in the playoffs. It’s a tough place to succeed as Michigan and Cincinnati learned last season. But perhaps Venables can do what Lincoln Riley couldn’t — get OU to the national title game in his first season as head coach.
How confident are you that OU could win two College Football Playoff game?
If anyone thinks OU fans are unreasonable, the response to my roundabout way of asking how confident fans are in the Sooners winning a national title is a good example that most are still based in reality. No one is expecting this team to win it all. Could they get there? Under the right circumstances, that doesn’t seem too crazy. But beating a program like Alabama or Ohio State in the final? Not to say it’s impossible but that’s simply asking too much of this group.
Who will be OU football's best player on offense?
Marvin Mims, WR (46.6%)
Dillon Gabriel, QB (35.0%)
Eric Gray, RB (8.3%)
Marcus Major, RB (4.2%)
Jalil Farooq, WR (4.2%)
Receiving votes: Brayden Willis, TE; Theo Wease, WR
Marvin Mims finished the 2021 season with 705 yards receiving on 32 catches. His five touchdowns last season was a step down from his nine in 2020. He stands to benefit the most from offensive coordinator Jeff Lebby’s arrival to Norman.
Who will be OU football's best player on defense?
Billy Bowman, DB (21.4%)
Key Lawrence, DB (15.4%)
Jalen Redmond, DL (13.7%)
Danny Stutsman, LB (11.1%)
Woodi Washington, CB (10.7%)
Receiving votes: Ethan Downs, DE; Justin Harrington, DB; DaShaun White, LB; David Ugwoegbu, LB; Reggie Grimes, DL; Dillon Gabriel, QB; DJ Graham, DB; Jeffery Johnson, DT; Justin Broiles, DB; Marcus Stripling, DL; Trey Morrison, DB
Billy Bowman started seven games last year as a true freshman. He broke up two passes, forced a fumble and recorded 1.5 tackles for loss of his 22 total. Much like Mims, a new defensive staff, one that’s proven to be one of the best in the country, figures to give Bowman and the rest of the unit a huge boost coming off of a disappointing 2021 performance.
Who will be OU football's best freshman by the end of the 2022 season?
Jayden Gibson, WR (34.5%)
Jaren Kanak, LB (29.1%)
Jovantae Barnes, RB (20.0%)
Gavin Sawchuck, RB (6.4%)
Gentry Williams, DB (3.6%)
Receiving votes: Robert Spears-Jennings, DB; Jacob Sexton, OL; Jason Llewellyn, TE; Kobie McKinzie, LB; Nic Anderson, WR
A 6-foot-5 freshman, it's not hard to see Jayden Gibson becoming a major difference-maker in this offense in his debut season. HIs size and athleticism will be a nightmare for opposing secondaries. And to think he was committed to Florida a week before ultimately signing with the Sooners.
Regardless of talent, who is your favorite OU football player entering the 2022 season?
Danny Stutsman, LB (23.3%)
Marvin Mims, WR (17.2%)
Drake Stoops, WR (10.3%)
Michael Turk, P (8.6%)
Brayden Willis, TE (6.9%)
Receiving votes: Billy Bowman, DB; Dillon Gabriel, QB; Jalil Farooq, WR; Jaren Kanak, LB; Key Lawrence, DB; Ethan Downs, DE; General Booty, QB; Theo Wease, WR; Jalen Redmond, DL; Justin Harrington, DB; Andrew Raym, C; Brey Walker, OL; Gavin Sawchuk, RB; Kobie McKinzie, LB: Marcus Major, Rb; Woodi Washington, DB
I can’t say I’m shocked.
