You all remember the onside kick.

Oklahoma-Oregon 2006. A game that still bothers even the most calloused OU fan.

It’s been 15 years since that day in Eugene, Oregon. My disbelief didn’t quite subside until I picked up The Oklahoman the next day. Here was the front page of that sports section on Sept. 17, 2006:

There’s a column from Berry Tramel in there. He did not miss with his lede.

“They will talk forever in these hills about this game, this instant classic, this controversial, hard-to-believe, wild-west-show of a ballgame won by Oregon 34-33,” Tramel wrote, “in a score that doesn’t do the drama justice.”

Tramel’s right. This was a classic game. I took the time to rewatch it late Wednesday night and noticed so many things that seemed to turn the outcome in every direction. Take away the controversy at the end and this is an absolutely fun watch.

That’s, however, what makes it so heartbreaking for Oklahoma fans.

The onside kick will always be the focal point. The play that decided the game for the Sooners, who led by 13 points with 1:12 remaining in regulation. But what else happened in Eugene that day? So, so much.
